Two days after the FDA announced a new warning regarding the risks of blood clots in two of its birth control pills, Bayer has announced that it has resolved 500 lawsuits brought by injured victims of the drugs Yaz and Yasmin. www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/ucm273021.htm
This settlement is in addition to the reported settlement of 70 lawsuits involving Yaz and Yasmin this past February. There are approximately 11,000 lawsuits involving Yaz and Yasmin left although that number may increase as more injured victims become aware of a possible link between their use of Yaz or Yasmin and injuries they may have suffered.
Most of the pending cases are currently before U.S District Judge David Herndon in East St. Louis, Illinois who had a trial scheduled for this past January. Reports indicate that Bayer requested that a mediator be appointed to discuss the possibility of resolution resulting in this settlement.
