Byetta-Cancer-Lawsuit-Pancreatic-Lawyer-AttorneyByetta Lawsuit News : Byetta, generically known as exenatide, has been linked to an increased risk of pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer, thyroid cancer and other cancers by a few studies recently published in prominent medical journals. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in April 2005, Byetta is an injectable type-2 diabetes medication that, when taken before the first and last meal of the day, can help patients better control their blood sugar levels. Byetta is classified as an incretin mimetic drug and is believed to improve patients’ control of their blood glucose levels by enhancing the pancreas’ response to the ingestion of food, suppressing the liver from producing unneeded sugars and slowing down the emptying of the stomach.

Despite Byetta’s reported effectiveness at treating type-2 diabetes, however, recently published research alleges that use of Byetta can significantly increase patients’ risk of developing serious pancreas damage, including pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer.

Byetta side effects have been reported to include:

  • Pancreatic Cancer
  • Pancreatitis
  • Thyroid Cancer
  • Hyperglycemia, dangerously high blood sugar levels (typically characterized by thirst, increased urination and/or drowsiness)
  • Hypoglycemia, dangerously low blood sugar levels (typically characterized by shakiness, increased heartbeat, blurry vision and/or dizziness)
  • Kidney problems or, in the worst cases, kidney failure, which could require dialysis or a kidney transplant
  • Severe allergic reaction

Research Alleges Link between Byetta, and Cancers, Pancreatitis, and Pancreatic Cancer

Research published in the 2011 Gastroenterology journal suggests that Byetta use can lead to an increased risk of pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer and other cancers. This research, which focused on reported adverse events associated with the use of exenatide from 2004 through 2009, found that individuals taking exenatides like Byetta could have an approximately 6 times increased risk of developing pancreatitis (when compared to type-2 diabetes patients not taking these medications). The risk for developing pancreatic cancer when taking Byetta was reported increased by about three times, according to the study’s findings. Additionally, researchers reported that patients taking Byetta had an increased risk of developing thyroid cancer, though the risk was not quantified as it had been for pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer.

In another study published in the February 2013 Journal of the American Medical Association Internal Medicine, researchers reported finding that patients who took Byetta and similar type-2 diabetes drugs doubled their risk of developing pancreatitis as compared to type-2 diabetics not taking these medications.

In the wake of these studies being published, the FDA announced in March 2013 that it would be reviewing unpublished findings of researchers who had found an increased risk of pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer and pre-cancerous cell changes (known as pancreatic duct metaplasis) for patients taking Byetta and similar medications. In this announcement, the FDA was careful to point out that it has not yet reached any conclusions about the potential risks associated with Byetta and similar drugs and that, upon concluding its extensive review, the FDA will publicly communicate its findings and make any necessary recommendations as it sees fit.
