Effexor Side Effects
Effexor, also known as Venlafaxine is a SSNRI (Selective Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors) antidepressant drug that is used to treat treat major depressive disorder, anxiety, and panic disorder. Effexor inhibits the reuptake of both norepinephrine and serotonin.
Approved by the FDA, Effexor has been successfully used in treating patients, but there have been many reports of very serious side effects including birth defects. It has been noted that Effexor causes heart and lung birth defects in newborns.
Research now indicates that women using the Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) (which are similar to Effexor but not identical) in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy—have a forty percent greater risk of their baby suffering birth defect malformations. Heart defects are sixty percent more likely, according to research.
Federal Effexor Lawsuits Consolidated Into Effexor MDL 2458
The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) has consolidated all federal Effexor lawsuits claiming that Effexor caused birth defects into one lawsuit ( In Re: Effexor (Venlafaxine Hydrochloride) Product Liability Litigation — MDL No. 2458 ). Judge Cynthia M. Rufe will preside over the Effexor MDL litigation in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, according to court documents released recently.
The panel ruled that Judge Rufe was able to take on the Effexor MDL in the Pennsylvania federal court as she was already presiding over another ongoing litigation involving an antidepressant drug, Zoloft, and its alleged link to birth defects (In re: Zoloft (Sertraline Hydrochloride) Products Liability Litigation).
The 9 federal Effexor lawsuits that are initially part of the MDL all claim that while pregnant, a woman took Effexor and eventually gave birth to a child with birth defects. There are another 10 Effexor lawsuits that are pending to be added to the Effexor MDL. Further, there are another 36 similar Effexor lawsuits in other courts across the country that could be “tag-along actions” in this Effexor MDL, according to court documents.
SSRi’s And The FDA
In that December 2011 Safety Announcement from the FDA, regulators warned that women who take a drug like Effexor or other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like Effexor during their pregnancy could significantly increase the potential risk of giving birth to children with a rare birth defect, persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN).
The harm caused by PPHN could be permanent or result in death. PPHN is diagnosed when a newborn can not breathe outside the womb of its mother.
