Januvia, generically known as Sitagliptin, has been reportedly linked to an increased risk of pancreatic cancer and pancreatitis by a few recent, prominent studies. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2006, Januvia is an oral type-2 diabetes medication that is prescribed to help control blood sugar levels and that may be prescribed along with other diabetes medications, like metformin. Typically prescribed to be used with a healthy diet and regular exercise, Januvia works by increasing the body’s levels of incretins, natural substances that play a key role in insulin production and, as a result, monitoring the blood glucose levels.
However, despite the fact that Januvia reportedly has less side effects than other new type-2 diabetes medications, recently published research alleges that use of Januvia can increase patients’ risk of developing serious pancreas damage.
Januvia side effects have been reported to include:
- Pancreatic Cancer
- Hyperglycemia, dangerously high blood sugar levels (generally marked by thirst, increased urination and/or drowsiness)
- Hypoglycemia, dangerously low blood sugar levels (generally marked by shakiness, increased heartbeat, blurry vision and/or dizziness)
- Severe allergic reaction

Research Alleges Link between Januvia Use, Pancreatic Cancer and Pancreatitis
Among the recently published studies that have linked Januvia use to an increased risk of pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer include research published in the 2011 Gastroenterology journal. This research, which focused on reported adverse events associated with use of sitagliptin from 2004 through 2009, found that individuals taking sitagliptins like Januvia could have an approximately 6 times increased risk of developing pancreatic cancer (when compared to type-2 diabetes patients not taking these medications).
In another study published in the February 2013 Journal of the American Medical Association Internal Medicine, researchers reported finding that patients who took Januvia and similar type-2 diabetes drugs were two times more likely to develop pancreatitis than type-2 diabetics not taking these medications.
Januvia And Pancreatic Cancer, Pancreatitis FDA Announcement
In the wake of these studies being published, the FDA announced in March 2013 that it would be reviewing unpublished findings of researchers who had found an increased risk of pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer and pre-cancerous cell changes (known as pancreatic duct metaplasis) for patients taking Januvia and similar medications. In this announcement, the FDA was careful to point out that it has not yet reached any conclusions about the potential risks associated with Januvia and similar drugs and that, upon concluding its extensive review, the FDA will publicly communicate its findings and make any necessary recommendations as it sees fit.
