Lipitor, a statin drug prescribed to treat high cholesterol, has been linked to some severe, irreversible side effects that can be life threatening. While medical professionals have been aware of some rare but serious Lipitor side effects, recently, the possible link between Lipitor and the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes has come to light with the release of a study conducted at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. The results of this study found that postmenopausal women taking Lipitor may have an increased risk of developing Lipitor Type 2 diabetes side effect. Although medical professionals caution patients to not stop taking Lipitor without consulting their doctors, the efficacy of Lipitor in some patients has been called into question.

FDA Lipitor Side Effects Warning and the Alleged Link to Type 2 Diabetes
Approved by the FDA in 1996, Lipitor has become one of the best selling prescription drugs worldwide, as Pfizer, the maker of Lipitor, has seen sales of Lipitor exceed $125 billion. Atorvastatin, the generic version of Lipitor, has been available in the U.S. since November 2011. Despite its popularity, however, Lipitor has come under some public scrutiny due to allegations that it may be dangerous for some patients. Specifically, in February 2012, the FDA released a Lipitor side effects warning to alert the public that use of Lipitor could increase the risk of sustaining serious damage to the muscles, the liver and the endocrine system (a system of glands key to liver and gastrointestinal function).

Around the same time as the FDA’s Lipitor side effects warning, a University of Massachusetts’ study was published and brought further scrutiny upon the alleged efficacy of Lipitor. This study found a potential link between the use of Lipitor and the development of Type 2 diabetes in postmenopausal women, particularly those who had a body mass index (BMI) that was less than 25. Specifically, of the 153,840 women (with a mean age of 63) evaluated in this study conducted from 1993 through 2005, more than 10,200 women had developed a Lipitor side effect of Type 2 diabetes by the conclusion of the study. Initial analysis of the results found that postmenopausal women taking statins had about a 9 percent risk of developing Type 2 diabetes side effect.
“Due to the extensive use of statins in the aging female population, it is critical that more studies are done to help understand the association with statins and the development of diabetes. Women who are taking statins should be aware of the need to check their blood sugars, along with their liver function tests,” stated Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, the director of women and heart disease at the Lenox Hill Hospital in Bronx, New York.
