National Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April is Sponsored by National Safety Council, Reports Alonso Krangle

This April, the National Safety Council is sponsoring National Distracted Driving Awareness Month with a campaign entitled “What were you thinking?” The focus of this campaign is to curb cellphone use when driving in an effort to reduce traffic accidents caused by distracted driving.

National-Distracted-Driving-Awareness-Month-Alonso-Krangle-LLPAccording to the National Safety Council (NSC), approximately 25 percent of all traffic accidents are caused by distracted driving, specifically cellphone use while driving. In an effort to reduce such motor vehicle accidents, the NSC is promoting National Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April to urge drivers to put down their cellphones and minimize other potential distractions so they can focus on the road when driving. The 2013 campaign is entitled “What were you thinking?,” and this year marks the third consecutive year the NSC has sponsored April’s National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

Although the focus of the NSC’s campaign is to curb cellphone use when driving, it is also geared towards informing drivers that the use of hands-free devices when driving can be just as dangerous as holding a cellphone, as the level of distraction to the brain is relatively the same in both cases. According to Janet Froetscher, the president and CEO of the NSC, “many drivers have a false sense of security that hands-free devices make cellphone use while driving safe… more than 30 research studies show hands-free devices provide no safety benefit as the distraction to the brain remains. We hope people will take the time this April to help spread this important message so needless tragedies can be prevented. [http://www.nsc.org/Pages/April-is-Distracted-Driving-Awareness-Month.aspx]
