Sexual Harassment: STERIS Corporation

sexual harassment at workGlobal healthcare company STERIS Corporation has been hit with a major lawsuit from a former employee claiming she was sexually harassed over the course of a number of years while her complaints of this matter had been ignored by her supervisor.

The victim, Jackie Adams, happens to hold the title of the first female technical instructor that was hired by the company since the company was founded over one hundred years ago. The harassment began years before the now well-known “Me Too” movement started in which industries finally began to quit ignoring the sexual harassment and abuse that was occurring throughout the workplace. “I want to be known for what I do and not what was done to me” says Adams.

Adams is known for quite a lot. Her name was included on the “Forty under Forty” list by Crain’s Cleveland. She won the IEEE Entrepreneurial Achievement Award, beating 200,000 other candidates and she was honored with The Women of Distinction Award from the Girl Scouts of America. One of her proudest achievements above all was founding Tareto MAA USA which is program that shelters girls in Kenya and educates against female genital circumcision.

With so many achievements and status, Adams was appalled and surprised at the complete lack of respect she was given while working at STERIS. “I felt objectified by my colleagues. I was harassed and when I spoke up for myself I was told to grow a sense of humor,” Adams said.

The details in the lawsuit filed against STERIS include; Obscene name calling. Jackie was called a “stripper” and “bitch” in front of co-workers. Jokes about rape were said during one of her classes. And a colleague singing a tune about sex during a course in training.

The complaints were handled on a case-by-case basis and responded with an email from the President and CEO of the company that “boys will be boys”.”I guess the disappointment for me was twofold. One, that I was treated that way in a corporate workplace and two, that I didn’t feel protected by management,” she stated.

After receiving absolutely no help from within the company, it was then that Adams hired an attorney to handle her case.

Trial is scheduled for September of this year.
