Children who take prescription antipsychotics drugs, such as Zyprexa, are at a significantly higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes than youth who do not take antipsychotic medication, a new study shows. The meta-analysis included 13 longitudinal studies involving 185,105 youth ages 2 to 24 years old who were prescribed antipsychotic drugs for at least 3 months.
Antipsychotics Juvenile Type-2 Diabetes LawsuitChildren who took prescription antipsychotic medication were at twice the risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to youth who had mental health issues but did not take antipsychotic medication, according to the analysis published on January 20 in the online JAMA Psychiatry medical journal. One analysis involving 10 studies found males were more at risk for developing type 2 diabetes than females, and youth are more at risk when they take olanzapine (Zyprexa) or are prescribed antipsychotic drugs over a long period of time. Conversely, youth diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder had a lower type 2 diabetes risk, the study showed.

Children Who Are Prescribed Zyprexa, Risperal, and Abilify have triple the risk of developing type 2 diabetes
The recent study supports findings from Vanderbilt University where researchers there found that children who took antipsychotic drugs, such as Zyprexa, Risperal, and Abilify have triple the risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to youth who took other drugs to treat the same medical conditions. In their 2013 study, researchers reviewed data from more than 28,000 patients from 6 to 24 years old who were enrolled in Tennessees Medicaid program and were prescribed Abilify, Risperdal, Seroquel and Zyprexa over a 12-year period. The study indicated that a childs risk for type 2 diabetes was present almost immediately within the first year of the child taking the antipsychotic medication, and continued for one year after the child stopped taking the drugs.

What is Type 2 Diabetes?
Diabetes is caused by the body’s inability to produce or use insulin, a hormone that controls blood sugar levels. A person’s blood sugar level becomes too high when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or if the insulin does not function properly. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of the medical condition. About 21 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with diabetes, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention. Diabetes can increase the risk of such serious health conditions as blindness, heart attack, nerve and kidney damage, and loss of toes or feet. Children are suffering from the disease with much greater frequency, the CDC added.
Type 2 Diabetes Antipsychotic Drug Lawsuit Legal Claims
The increase use of prescription antipsychotic drugs among children have prompted lawsuits being filed on behalf of youth who experienced devastating side effects from the medication. For instance, complaints are being filed on behalf of young males who took Risperdal allege that the drugs maker, Johnson Johnson failed to disclose side effects that include diabetes, weight gain and gynecomastia, which is abnormal male breast growth. The Risperdal complaints also allege that Risperdal was illegally promoted to children when its use in youth had not yet been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA did not approve Risperdal for any use in children for any purpose until 2006. In 2013, Johnson Johnson and its Janssen Pharmaceuticals unit reached an agreement with the U.S, Department of Justice to pay more than $2.2 billion to resolve civil and criminal charges filed against the companies over misbranding Risperdal and its other drugs.
