NYS Extends Deadline for Child Victims Act
Child sex abuse victims in New York – who want to file a lawsuit against their abusers – are breathing a sigh of relief.
And here’s why:
The child victims act — which finally passed in 20-19… Extended the statute of limitations for pursuing child sex abuse cases. For those over the age of 55, it lifted the statute of limitations temporarily. The act gave those survivors a one-year grace period to come forward and file a civil case against their abuser, and any related institutions.
The grace period was set to expire in August… But because of the Covid-19 outbreak, courts were closed and new lawsuits were banned. Victims feared they would be shut out of taking legal action. Thankfully, the state of New York has now extended the deadline, 5 months, until February 20-21, 2021.
But the clock is still ticking – and time is of the essence.
