Most parents feel uneasy about leaving their children in the care of someone else. However, they trust that the person that they leave their children with will not harm them. That is not always the case. It is estimated that 20 percent of girls and 5 percent of boys are sexually-abused.
Keep in mind that the actual number of abused children may be much higher than this because many cases of child sexual abuse are not reported. Sexual abuse often happens at safe havens such as daycares and churches. These places are supposed to be safe, but they are a nightmare for many children.
Finding out that your child has been sexually-abused at a safe haven can be quite frustrating. Fortunately, there are some things that you can do about it.
Be Supportive and Caring
Children who are sexually-abused may feel a whirlwind of emotions. They may feel as though they did something wrong in order to cause the sexual abuse. They may also experience fear and shame. Additionally, sexually-abused children are often angry. The best thing that you can do in order to comfort your child is to let them know that they are loved no matter what.
Report the Abuse
If you feel that your child is in immediate danger, then you will need to call 911. You can also report the abuse to the National Sexual Assault Hotline. Additionally, it is a good idea to get counseling. Both you and your child can benefit by talking to a counselor. A counselor can teach the two of you how to deal with the aftermath of sexual abuse.
