Melville, NY (PRWEB) March 13, 2012
Attorneys Andres Alonso and David Krangle, founding partners of Alonso Krangle LLP, a leading law firm focused on fighting for the rights of serious personal injury victims, announce that they are evaluating lawsuits stemming from birth defects allegedly caused by side effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants used during pregnancy. The following SSRI antidepressants are being investigated by Alonso Krangle LLP due to a possible association with heart, lung, brain and other birth defects:
-
Paxil Birth Defect Side Effects:
In 2005, the U.S. Food Drug Administration (FDA) moved Paxil from Pregnancy Category C to Category D because of its association with birth defects. The classification means that studies in pregnant women have shown a risk to the fetus.
-
Prozac Birth Defect Side Effects:
In 1996, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine revealed that women taking Prozac during pregnancy were two times as likely to deliver a baby with three or more ???minor abnormalities??? and poorer than average neonatal adaptation.
-
Zoloft Birth Defect Side Effects:
A 2007 study in the New England Journal of Medicine reported that that babies born to women who used Zoloft during the first trimester of pregnancy were twice as likely to suffer heart-related birth defects.
-
Celexa:
In 2010, Forest Laboratories paid out $313 million in damages under the False Claims Act for illegally marketing Celexa to children and for paying doctors kickbacks to prescribe the drugs.
-
Lexapro:
Lexapro is also manufactured by Forest Laboratories. Along with Celexa, Forest Laboratories was accused of illegally marketing Lexapro to children and paying doctors kickbacks to prescribe the drug. Those charges were also resolved in 2010.
-
Effexor Side Effects:
A study released in May 2010 by the Canadian Medical Association Journal suggests use of venlafaxine doubles the risk of miscarriage.

SSRI Antidepressants and Birth Defects
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, SSRIs antidepressants are the most commonly prescribed antidepressants in the U.S. SSRIs ease depression by affecting a chemical messenger (neurotransmitter) in the brain called serotonin, which is known to affect mood and emotional responses.
The FDA has approved SSRI antidepressants as treatments for depression and other psychiatric disorders. These drugs are commonly used to treat depression in pregnant women, though no adequate and well-controlled studies of SSRIs in pregnant women.
However, several studies have uncovered evidence of a possible link between SSRI antidepressants and birth defects. For example, in December 2005, the FDA warned pregnant women and their doctors of an increased risk of heart defects in newborns when taking Paxil.
The following year, the FDA warned that women taking SSRIs were six times more likely to deliver babies with PPHN (persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn). A study published in January 2012 in the British Medical Journal found that children born to women who took SSRI antidepressants while pregnant face double the risk of having a baby born with PPHN, a life-threatening lung condition.
The following birth defects are being investigated by Alonso Krangle LLP due to a possible association with the use of SSRIs in pregnancy.
- Atrial and ventrical septal heart defects (ASD/VSD)
- Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS)
- Transposition of Great Arteries
