Viagra, generically known as Sildenafil Citrate, has been linked to an increased risk of Melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer, by a recent study published in a prominent medical journal. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in April 1998, Viagra, (sildenafil citrate), is a prescription drug used to treat erectile dysfunction (trouble having an erection) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). It acts by inhibiting cGMP-specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), an enzyme that promotes degradation of cGMP, which regulates blood flow in the penis. Viagra is manufactured by Pfizer, Inc. a multinational pharmaceutical corporation headquartered in New York City, is one of the worlds largest pharmaceutical companies.
Due to serious side effects Viagra received several label changes by the FDA in 2005 and in 2007 after reports of problems users had with sudden vision or hearing loss. A JAMA Internal Medicine study published April 7, 2014, suggests that men who use Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction had a noticeable increased risk of melanoma.

Viagra Side Effects : Research Alleges Link between Viagra and Melanoma
A study published April 7, 2014, in JAMA Internal Medicine suggests that men who use Viagra to treat impotence had an increased risk of melanoma. To find out whether there was a connection between using sildenafil and developing melanoma in men in the United States, researchers collected and analyzed melanoma and sildenafil from the Health Professional’s Follow-up Study. Participants in the study were asked whether they use sildenafil to treat impotence and whether they had any cancers. Participants who had cancer were removed from the research, which left 25,848 men with an average age of 65. The follow up was conducted between 2000 and 2010, and during that time, researchers discovered that the use of sildenafil “was significantly associated with an increased risk of subsequent melanoma.” Researchers suggest sildenafil use may increase the risks of melanoma because it may allow skin cancer to be more invasive in the body.

In July 2005, the FDA approved updating labeling for Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, other medications that treat erectile dysfunction, to include sudden vision loss, attributed to non arthritic ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) as a side effect. NAION is a condition in which blood flow is blocked to the optic nerve.
Two years later, the FDA ordered another revision of the labels to include the potential of the prescription medications to cause sudden hearing loss.
