NuvaRing Lawsuit Due To Nuvaring Blood Clots, Side Effects And Injuries
First introduced in Europe in early 2001, NuvaRing birth control was approved by the U.S. Food Drug Administration (FDA) later that same year. It is now one of the most popular birth control contraceptive devices on the market, and is used by more than 1 million women throughout the U.S. NuvaRing is a small flexible ring that is designed to be inserted into the vagina once a month. It is kept in place for three weeks, and prevents pregnancy by releasing controlled amounts of ethinyl estradiol, an estrogen, and a progestin called etonogestrel into the bloodstream.
Etonogestrel is a form of desogestrel, a third-generation progestin. Studies have linked contraceptives made with desogestrel to a higher risk of blood clots, heart attacks, strokes and other health problems compared to other forms of hormonal birth control. In February 2007, the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen petitioned the FDA to ban oral birth control pills that contain desogestrel, maintaining that they could double the risk of blood clots when compared to second generation oral contraceptives.
NuvaRing lawsuits allege that Merck Co. (formerly Schering-Plough, formerly Organon) has failed to adequately warn about the potential for NuvaRing blood clots and other side effects. Marketing materials have led many women to believe that NuvaRing is as safe as birth control pills. However, because the hormones in NuvaRing are absorbed directly into the blood stream, users receive a much higher dose than what is generally delivered by birth control pills, according to NuvaRing lawsuits.
