Allergan Breast Implant Recall: Implants Increase Cancer Risk

Allergan Breast Implant Cancer Recall Lawsuits

Our Lawyers Are Helping People File Allergan Breast Implant Lawsuits

Research shows that Allergan BIOCELL textured breast implants and tissue expanders lead to an increased risk of cancer. The cancer is called BIA-ALCL, short for breast implant-associated – aplastic large cell lymphoma. BIA-ACLC is a specific type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma related directly to breast implants.

Allergan recalled BIOCELL textured breast implants and tissue expanders because of the danger they pose. Lawsuits are being filed by women across the country who received the now-recalled implants.

Some of these women have developed breast implant cancer, resulting in invasive surgeries, chemotherapy and/or radiation.

For other women, the fear of developing BIA-ACLC was enough to have the dangerous Allergen breast implants removed and replaced.

Our lawyers at Alonso Krangle, LLP, can help determine if you are eligible to file a recalled breast implant lawsuit against Allergan. If you have (or had) Allergan textured breast implants and developed cancer, you might be entitled to collect compensation from Allergan.

A lawsuit may be the last thing on your mind as you battle cancer and try to heal, but payments can aid in your financial and emotional recovery. We can fight for compensation for cancer caused by Allergan breast implants while you fight for your health.

Timeline of Allergan Breast Implants and Lawsuits

Allergan makes breast implants and tissue expanders. It is a large pharmaceutical company based in Ireland that distributes and sells its products around the globe. People have filed lawsuits against Allergan for producing and selling breast implants that increase the risk of cancer in the US and other countries.

The danger of Allergan’s textured implants has been known since at least 2019.

July 6, 2019– the FDA received (to date) 573 reports of BIA-ALCL. The FDA determined that 481 of the cases of BIA-ALCL can be attributed to Allergen textured breast implants
July 24, 2019 – Allergan issues a global recall of all of its BIOCELL textured breast implants and tissue expanders.

September 2019 – a woman from Illinois files a proposed class-action lawsuit. She claims that Allergan knew for years before the recall that its textured implants increased cancer risk.
October 2019 – two additional lawsuits are filed by women in Florida. These women seek compensation for the cost of surgically removing the dangerous breast implants and replacing them.

June 1, 2020 – the FDA updated its safety communication about the Allergan textured breast implant recall. The communication announced that Allergan was beginning a multi-channel campaign to spread awareness about the BIOCELL textured breast implant recall to patients who might not know they are at risk.

What Are the Dangers of Textured Breast Implants?

Many studies link breast implants to cancer, some of which date back to 2011. The studies show that textured breast implants can cause what is known as “breast implant-associated anaplastic large-cell lymphoma” of BIA-ALCL. It is not breast cancer. It is a non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which affects the immune system. The World Health Organization characterized BIA-ALCL as a type of T-cell lymphoma that can form after breast implant surgery.

BIA-ALCL, when diagnosed early, might be treatable through surgery only. However, chemotherapy and radiation are often necessary factors for a full recovery. Diagnosis and treatment come with high costs, financially, physically, and emotionally.

What Is Breast Implant Cancer and What are the Symptoms?

Breast implant cancer is not breast cancer. It is a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which is a cancer of the lymphatic system.

Anaplastic large-cell lymphoma associated with breast implants is usually found in nearby scar tissue and surrounding fluid. Sometimes, however, it spreads throughout the entire body. BIA-ALCL can be fatal.

The FDA received reports that of the 33 women who died of breast cancer implant cancer, 13 of them had breast implants of known origin. Of those 13, 12 were confirmed to have Allergan textured breast implants at the time of their cancer diagnosis.

Some symptoms of BIA-ALCL can include:

  • Fatigue
  • Changes in the external appearance of the breast
  • Asymmetry of the breast
  • Enlargement of the breast
  • Hardening of the breast
  • Pain
  • Rash
  • Swelling
  • Redness or rash
  • Breast or armpit lumps
  • Unexplainable weight loss
