Buckyballs Magnet Toy Recall
On March 27, 2010, the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a recall of roughly 175,000 Buckyballs High-Powered Magnet Toy Sets. According to the agency, the Buckyballs magnet sets were labeled Ages 13+ and did not meet the mandatory toy standard which requires that such powerful magnets are not sold for children under 14. Magnets found by young children can be swallowed or aspirated. If more than one magnet is swallowed, the magnets can attract each other and cause intestinal perforations or blockages, which can be fatal.
The Buckyballs recall involved sets labeled Ages 13+. The toy set contains 216 powerful rare earth magnets, and was intended to build unlimited shapes and patterns. According to the CPSC, the recalled magnets were sold at a variety of stores, including stores selling childrens toys, stationery and office supplies and various online sites from March 2009 through March 2010. Consumers were advised to take the recalled Buckyballs sets away from children under 14 immediately and contact their manufacturer for instructions on receiving a refund.
While the initial recall notice indicated that no injuries had been reported in relation to the recalled Buckyballs magnet sets, these types of toys continue to seriously injure children. Since 2010, there have been at least 43 incidents of children and toddlers who accidentally swallowed such magnets, according to the CPSC, with an increase in incidents each year. In one case, a 3-year-old girl sustained three holes in her lower intestine and one in her stomach after swallowing 37 high-powered Buckyballs magnets.
