The Mirena IUD (Intrauterine Device) has been associated with serious Mirena side effects, including uterine perforations and device migration outside of the uterus. Women who sustain these and other serious Mirena complications or injuries often must undergo risky surgical procedures to remove the device. Even then, victims of Mirena side effects may suffer permanent internal scarring, organ damage, and infection. The leading law firm of Alonso Krangle LLP is currently investigating potential Mirena lawsuit claims on behalf of women who suffered serious Mirena complications from the IUD.
Many victims of Mirena birth control have already filed Mirena lawsuits alleging Bayer Healthcare understated the device’s serious risks, including:
- Mirena IUD perforating the Uterine Wall
- Mirena IUD perforating the Cervix
- Mirena IUD migrating Outside the Uterus
- Intestinal Perforation by the Mirena
- Expulsion of the Mirena IUD
- Fertility Problems due to Mirena
- Ectopic pregnancy due to Mirena
- Miscarriage
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease due to Mirena
- Post-operative Surgical Complications following Removal of Mirena

Mirena IUD Lawsuits
The Mirena IUD is a long-acting form of birth control that is inserted into the uterus to disrupt the egg and sperm. The device also releases the progestin levonorgestrel.
Once Mirena is inserted into the uterus, it may stay there for up to five years. No one knows exactly how Mirena works to prevent pregnancy, something even its maker, Bayer Healthcare, admits.
Since it came on the market in 2000, Bayer Healthcare has aggressively promoted Mirena as a convenient method of birth control for the “busy mom” demographic. Among other things, a Mirena campaign called the “Simple Style Program” claimed the device would help users “look and feel great.” The Simple Style Program consisted of a live presentation in a consumer’s home or other private setting by a representative from a social networking site called “Mom Central” and a nurse practitioner. Attendees were told using the Mirena IUD would increase the level of intimacy, romance, and emotional satisfaction between sexual partners.
In 2009, federal health regulators warned Bayer that claims made as part of the Simple Style Program were unsubstantiated. The warning also noted that the script for Simple Style omitted information about serious conditions, including susceptibility to infections and the possibility of miscarriage if a woman becomes pregnant on Mirena.
